Strachan defends Thomson selection

Gordon Strachan has defended his decision to start with midfielder Kevin Thomson against Portsmouth at the weekend.

The Scottish international returned to action after suffering a fractured fibula six weeks ago and was immediately recalled into the side with less than a week's training under his belt.

But now he faces a further couple of weeks out after limping off inside the first ten minutes of the 2-2 draw at the Riverside.

"Six weeks out is about right for the injury that Kevin had," Strachan told the Evening Gazette. "My own son had the same injury when he was at Hartlepool and he was back in six weeks. The doctors know more than anyone and we always take their advice.

"The ref seemed to deem it OK to kick somebody on the shin, and then kick him again soon after that," he added. "It appears that Portsmouth decided to give him a couple of wallops to see how his leg was coming on."
