Boro in defensive shuffle
Middlesbrough are close to signing one defender and are ready to open talks with another.
Manager Tony Mowbray has already held early discussions with former Reading and Burnley centre-half Andre Amougou and could also do likewise with out-of-contract full-back Martin Cranie.
Regarded as an uncompromising stopper, Amougou, 27 and formerly known as Andre Bikey, is said to be close to agreeing to a switch to the Riverside. Indeed he could have already arrived there on loan last season until instead deciding to join Bristol City.
Meanwhile, Mowbray also wants to bring in a left-back and Cranie, 25, could well fit the bill having rejected new terms at Coventry City. He wants to stay in the Championship and Mowbray may step in.
Boro are desperately short at the back following the recent departures of Matthew Bates, Tony McMahon and Justin Hoyte, which prompted their move to return right-back Stuart Parnaby to the club after a year out of action following his release from Birmingham City.
