Keeper deal finalised

Middlesbrough have finalised the signing of goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler following a recent trial.

The Swiss shot-stopper is coming in as cover for regular choice Jason Steele and is seen as the replacement for Welsh international Danny Coyne after his departure at the end of last season.

At 23-years-old and six feet and five inches in height, free agent Leutwiler certainly has the kind of presence manager Tony Mowbray admires in a goalkeeper. He will be sat on the bench against Barnsley in the season's opener at Oakwell tomorrow.

"Jayson has come in to try to offer genuine competition to Jason Steele," Mowbray told the Northern Echo. "It's important that you have that, and over the four or five games he played in pre-season for us, he excelled in certain moments.

"He's young and relatively inexperienced, but he's extremely agile. He keeps the ball out of the net and his distribution is good," he added. "He just needs an opportunity to play somewhere along the line, and we'll wait and see whether that materialises for him."
