Boro suffer blow as winger ruled out

Middlesbrough have been dealt a major injury blow with news that recent signing Mustapha Carayol won't play again this year.

The 23-year-old joined Boro in a £300,000 deal from Bristol Rovers over the summer but requires surgery on the knee injury originally picked up in the win at Gillingham in the Capital One Cup last month.

However, manager Tony Mowbray won't be rushing back into the loan market to seek an immediate replacement, preferring instead to hand opportunities to some of his existing squad. Luke Williams, Adam Reach, Emmanuel Ledesma, Merouane Zemmama and Marvin Emnes are all capable of offering options out wide.

"He has taken it really hard, he has not had an injury before and he has had a move to a level where he wants to play in his career and has had this set back," Mowbray told the Northern Echo. "He has started fantastically well for us. We were all excited by the talent he brings, the different dimension he brings.

"We will support him in every way we can," he added. "Hopefully in three or four months he will be back with his boots on and doing what he did at the start of the season."
