'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Mowbray hails former skipper

Former Middlesbrough skipper Matthew Bates has once again been hailed by manager Tony Mowbray.

The 25-year-old has been training with the Boro first-team squad at Rockliffe Park this week after previously suffering the fifth cruciate
knee ligament injury of his career last season.

Although out of contract with the club, Bates should soon be playing competitive football again and may even earn himself a short-term deal at the Riverside once fully fit.

"We're all hugely impressed with Matthew," Mowbray told the Evening Gazette. "How many others would have even wanted to take on the challenge of another rehab of six months on a knee, of spending every day in the gym pumping iron, building up the muscle; every day the same repetition of drills, the boredom of it?

"That's the measure of the man," he added. "That's why he was captain of our football club last year, because he is made of the right stuff."
