Andy handy in defensive role

Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray believes the versatile Andy Halliday's recent switch into defence could become a permanent one.

The 21-year-old arrived as a forward with goalscoring potential from Scottish outfit Livingston a couple of years ago but has lately switched to left-back following injury to regular George Friend.

And now Mowbray regards the Glaswegian as a proper option for the role alongside the likes of Stuart Parnaby and Justin Hoyte, who are already well-capable of swapping flanks.

"I felt he could play left-back for us," Mowbray told the Northern Echo. "He is decent with the ball and I have no fears about playing him there, he has looked good.

"I have had to wait to give him a chance there, but I think it has worked reasonably well for us," he added. "As well as showing an awareness defensively he does join in with the attacks which is good."
