Boro witness late deal collapse

Dutchman Marvin Emnes missed out on a deadline move to Swansea City after they opted against a cash-only move for the Middlesbrough striker.

The 24-year-old would have headed in the opposite direction had Boro been successful in hijacking Danny Graham's £5m move to Sunderland. However, Graham didn't want to consider dropping back into the Championship to rejoin his former club.

The Swans had already settled on a part-exchange deal which would have seen Boro paying the balance in cash. As it turned out Graham, 27, instead agreed a three-and-a-half-year deal at the Stadium of Light.

But manager Tony Mowbray insisted that wasn't an indication there was money available for new signings at the Riverside when the loan window opens again next week.

"It was disappointing to see reports saying we had bid £5.5m for Danny Graham because the perception is we have that money to spend. We haven't," he assured the Northern Echo. "If we have an asset they like and they have an asset we like, no money has to exchange hands. Or there could be a bit of money we could afford."
