Middlesbrough chief Tony Mowbray sympathised with match-winner Curtis Main after being sent-off moments after scoring the only goal against Leeds United at the Riverside.
The 20-year-old headed the hosts into the lead with only nine minutes remaining but was then brandished two yellow cards in quick succession by referee Keith Stroud for dissent and then deliberate handball.
"Without over-criticising the referee, I think he got it wrong, he is a young boy who was stretching every sinew because he wants to be a footballer," Mowbray told the Northern Echo. "But it was not deliberate handball in a million years. It was poor man-management from the referee, but it didn't affect the result.
"Curtis is disappointed, frustrated, annoyed and angry but the referee is here to do a job, and I am sure he is a good honest guy," he added. "He just had a poor night."
Boro's victory was their first in six league games and leaves them four points clear of seventh-placed Brighton but still six behind Hull City, in second.
