We deserved better - Mowbray

Manager Tony Mowbray felt Middlesbrough deserved much better following their 2-1 defeat to Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium.

The visitors had their already cautioned defender Jonathan Woodgate sent-off just ahead of the hour mark after their opponents had swiftly retaken the lead in response to a Kieron Dyer equaliser.

"I thought we deserved more than that and we needed a better official to referee the game because there were some bewildering decisions out there today," Mowbray told BBC Sport. "The penalty was one of them and the sending-off was certainly one of them.

"Bolton started the game well, which they always do but I thought we had a decent foothold in the game and then they got a goal through a cross which just drifted in," he added. "But that's the way our luck has been going at the minute. I thought we were the better team but the history books will show that we lost."

Middlesbrough dropped to twelfth place in the table and finally out of play-off contention as a result of their latest defeat.

Head coach Aitor Karanka insists his Middlesbrough side are still in a good position to gain promotion despite the disappointment of being held at Birmingham City.

Decision costs Boro victory

Middlesbrough moved back to the top of the table but they had to settle for a third successive draw at Birmingham City.

Jordan Rhodes cancelled out Stephen Gleeson's opener before the break, while Gaston Ramirez later seized the initiative for the promotion-chasers as they went in front.

However, David Davis soon equalised before Boro's Daniel Ayala had an effort wrongly disallowed for offside. His colleagues were also twice denied by the woodwork.
