Skipper admits to struggle

Skipper admits to struggle

Middlesbrough skipper Rhys Williams conceded the responsibility of leading his side probably contributed to his own dip in performances last season.

The 24-year-old Australian international recovered from a serious ankle ligament injury but struggled following his return to first-team duty on Boxing Day.

"As captain it hits you a little bit harder when the team is struggling because you want to show the lads you are up for the fight and when things aren't going your way it's difficult to get back to where you were," he told the Evening Gazette. "Sometimes I think too much about the team rather than myself and my own game. I always strive for my best anyway, I'm always my biggest critic."

Williams was restricted to just 28 appearances for the Teessiders last season on their way to a disappointing sixteenth-place finish.
