Midfielder joins Boro

Middlesbrough have signed former Sunderland midfielder Dean Whitehead on a two-year deal following a successful medical.

The experienced 31-year-old joins the Teessiders having made 154 appearances and scored five goals during four years at Stoke City.

Prior to that Whitehead completed two hundred games for Sunderland, where he often partnered current Boro midfielder Grant Leadbitter. He originally began his career at his local club Oxford United.

Whitehead becomes the second new arrival at the Riverside over the summer following Hungarian international Joszef Varga coming in on a season's loan from Debrecen.
