Keeper targets first-team

Keeper targets first-team

New goalkeeper Tomas Mejias is chasing a first-team spot after agreeing a two-year deal at Middlesbrough.

But the Spaniard faces stiff competition from Jason Steele and Dimi Konstantopoulos at the Riverside.

Mejias, 25, managed just one appearance whilst at Real Madrid - a figure matched during a loan spell with the Teessiders last season, until a dislocated finger ended his chances.

"I was impressed from the very start when I came here because everything is very professional - the stadium, the training ground, the coaching set-up," Mejias told the Evening Gazette. "My ambition is to progress and it has helped me a lot to come to England.

"It is a good country to play football in and the fans are very passionate. Over here teams always play hard and it's always fast," he continued. "It was good to play my first game and disappointing to get injured. The important thing for me is to continue in the first team if I can."
