Boro close in on midfielder

Middlesbrough are closing in on Norwich City midfielder Jonny Howson despite interest from rivals Sunderland.

His former club Leeds United already appear out of the race with Teesside seemingly his likeliest destination, according to the Northern Echo. Howson, 29, previously served under new Black Cats chief Simon Grayson when in charge at Elland Road.

Boro counterpart Garry Monk would ideally hope to complete a couple of deals prior to flying out to their training camp in Portugal at the weekend.

Reading's Chris Gunter is another target of the Championship newcomers after the departure of Antonio Barragan and continuing speculation surrounding George Friend.
