Midfielder leaves Boro

Middlesbrough midfielder Marten de Roon has returned to former club Atalanta for an undisclosed fee.

The 26-year-old originally joined the Teessiders from the Italian Serie A club in an £8.8m deal in June 2016.

He scored five goals in 36 appearances but experienced a rather mixed time of things while in the Premier League. His latest move is believed to be around £13m.

"I can not wait to start," de Roon earlier commented in the Evening Gazette. "It's all a bit strange because yesterday there was something and today everything is going on really.

"I've talked to some of my old team-mates and am looking forward to rejoining today," he added. "I'm excited, I hope I can see them again today and re-engage with them."
