Boro ease past Gills

Recent signing Mustapha Carayol scored in only his second appearance as Middlesbrough handed League Two Gillingham a first defeat of the season in their Capital One Cup second round tie at the Priestfield Stadium.

Gambian winger Carayol opened the scoring with a fine solo goal midway through the first-half but the outcome still remained in doubt until Scottish Under-21 international Cameron Park claimed an important second in the final minute.

Manager Tony Mowbray earlier made six changes for the visitors from the side that defeated Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Recalled Boro striker Marvin Emnes soon had a low attempt blocked by goalkeeper Stuart Nelson, who also denied the busy Carayol from distance.

And the visitors were rewarded for their bright start when taking the lead midway through the opening half as Carayol raced into the area and drove low past Nelson.

He almost added another with a deflected shot onto an upright early in the second-half, although the Gills were starting to appear more dangerous. Deon Burton struck narrowly wide and skipper Danny Kedwell wasn't far away either with a shot on the turn.

But after losing skipper Rhys Williams to an ankle injury the visitors wrapped it up in the final minute when Park collected from substitute Merouane Zemmama and chipped neatly over the goalkeeper.
