Boro's hopes continue to fade

Middlesbrough's outside hopes of promotion suffered another serious knock following a 3-2 defeat against relegation-threatened Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux.

Midfielder Grant Leadbitter twice equalised for the visitors to cancel out a Stephen McManus own-goal and another from Bjorn Sigurdarson, until Wolves' Irish striker Kevin Doyle headed a 70th minute winner.

Boro went desperately close early on with Justin Hoyte drilling against the crossbar but it was their opponents forging ahead when Stephen Hunt's seventeenth-minute cross was headed past his own goalkeeper by McManus.

But the visitors were back level just eight minutes later as Leadbitter followed up to crash in off the underside of the bar after Dutch keeper Dorus De Vries had parried from Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Adam Reach then dragged another opportunity wide for Boro and Mustapha Carayol had a deflected shot from the edge of the box turned onto the woodwork by DeVries.

Wolves midfielder Hunt next lacked composure when well-placed at the other end before Jutkiewicz forced a late save for the visitors ahead of the interval.

However, it was the hosts regaining their advantage shortly after the restart when Sigurdarson progressed inside the area and despatched a low finish beyond Jason Steele.

As earlier their opponents weren't behind for long with Leadbitter producing a superb low 30-yard drive into the corner to equalise just four minutes later.

Both Hunt and Jamie O'Hara threatened for the home side as first Steele and then George Friend remained firm, while Sigurdarson was also denied by the Boro keeper until Doyle glanced in a header with twenty minutes remaining.

This time there was to be no response from the visitors despite Jutkiewicz sending an effort narrowly wide just before the end.
