Middlesbrough's season continues to fizzle out following a scoreless draw with lowly Peterborough United at the Riverside.

Manager Tony Mowbray earlier made five changes in a bid to revive fortunes but it was to no avail as his side dropped more valuable points.

The visitors' record was much the better going into the game and Joe Newell shot well wide early on, although weekend two-goal man Grant Leadbitter went close when forcing Austrian keeper Bobby Olejnik into action at the other end.

Boro continued to press with skipper Rhys Williams, on loan Ishmael Miller and Justin Hoyte each threatening, until Craig Alcock sent a couple of well-struck replies - the second of which produced a decent stop from Jason Steele.

His opposite number Olejnik next kept out Sammy Ameobi before Boro's George Friend had to be withdrawn following a suspected recurrence of his recent hamstring injury.

Returning midfielder McEachran forced another full-length save from Olejnik following the break and after Posh's Lee Tomlin had already tried an attempt.

However, Posh missed a definite chance when Kane Ferdinand arrived at the far post to meet Tommy Rowe's cross but was unable to find the target.

Recalled skipper Williams then covered well as the visitors continued to threaten, until Leadbitter was narrowly wide from the edge of the opposite area as neither side could find a way through.
