Late blow for ten-man Boro

Substitute Conor Sammon struck a last-minute winner to deny ten-man Middlesbrough a point at Derby County.

Chris Martin had earlier earned the home side the lead on the stroke of half-time but Dean Whitehead equalised with sixteen minutes remaining.

However, Boro were always up against it after having striker Curtis Main sent-off for a second bookable offence just past the half-hour.

The visitors were forced to defend early and on loan goalkeeper Shay Given was required to turn over a Craig Bryson cross while Jake Buxton headed over.

George Friend also had to halt the run of Jamie Ward on the edge of the area and the referee waved play on, although he was soon cautioning Main for a challenge on the keeper.

Kei Kamara fired over at the other end before being narrowly wide with an acrobatic volley from Jacob Butterfield's free-kick.

Former Republic of Ireland international Given soon diverted away Craig Forsyth's cross and Will Hughes hoisted over. But Main was then dismissed after receiving his second yellow of the night following a clash with Buxton.

Even so, Albert Adomah forced Lee Grant into action at his near post before Andre Wisdom replied at Given from the edge of the area.

But Derby still went in front when Martin turned in Bryson's cross in first-half added time, to leave the visitors with much to do.

Goalscorer Martin and Forsyth were both wide after the restart while Kamara headed Friend's cross at Grant, although he then blocked Buxton's header on the line to prevent a second goal.

Given also had to deny Ward at his near post until the visitors levelled as Whitehead claimed his first goal for the club following an excellent break from substitute Mustapha Carayol.

However, Boro were to be eventually disappointed when Sammon bundled in a late ball into the area to secure maximum points.
