Boro deliver Boxing Day knockout

Middlesbrough knocked Burnley off the top of the table with a 1-0 victory at the Riverside.

Emmanuel Ledesma's 25-yard strike midway through the opening half ensured welcome back-to-back triumphs for new head coach Aitor Karanka.

Defender Jonathan Woodgate returned to lead the home side and Albert Adomah had an early chance from a cross by Ledesma, who then fired narrowly wide before also lifting a 30-yard free-kick over.

Woodgate next headed another free-kick through to Clarets keeper Tom Heaton, until Ledesma gave his side the lead when scoring for the second consecutive game after Adomah had cleared upfield.

Veteran Boro keeper Shay Given turned Danny Ings' header over in reply and Sam Vokes was harmlessly wide following the break.

Burnley's Dean Marney also headed over from close-range after the lively Ledesma had already curled another attempt wide.

On loan Republic of Ireland shot-stopper Given was though soon back in action when keeping out substitute Junior Stanislas' firm strike, while opposite number Heaton denied Adomah late on as the hosts held on for the victory.
