Middlesbrough succumbed to a 3-1 defeat to Manchester United in caretaker manager Steve Agnew's first game in temporary charge at the Riverside.

The visitors were ahead at the interval after Marouane Fellaini headed in Ashley Young's deep cross towards the far post.

Jesse Lingard increased that advantage with over an hour played, and although substitute Rudy Gestede soon replied, Antonio Valencia added an injury-time third when goalkeeper Victor Valdes slipped.

Marcus Rashford had already forced Valdes into a sharp early save while opposite number David De Gea was required to turn aside from Gaston Ramirez.

Home keeper Valdes then produced a double-stop to frustrate both Rashford and Valenica, before being beaten by Fellaini's header following Young's free-kick on the half-hour.

Boro were having enough possession but found themselves further in arrears into the second period when Lingard drove in from the edge of the area.

The hosts replied fifteen minutes later as Alvaro Negredo headed back Stewart Downing's deep cross and Gestede was on hand to turn the ball into the net.

Striker Negredo soon threatened again but couldn't find the target, and it was the visitors wrapping it up in added time when Valdes' unfortunate slip presented Valencia with an easy third goal.
