Middlesbrough 1 Southampton 2
Sat 13th May 3.00pm
Middlesbrough's final home game of the season resulted in a 2-1 defeat to Southampton at the Riverside.
Jay Rodriguez opened the visitors' account just ahead of the break and substitute Nathan Redmond curled in another prior to the hour-mark.
Shane Long then blasted a penalty over the crossbar after being brought down by goalkeeper Brad Guzan, before Boro's Patrick Bamford claimed his first goal since returning to the club.
The former Chelsea forward had already struck at Fraser Forster from distance during the opening half while George Friend also headed wide.
But the Saints were still on the march as Rodriguez firmly drove in from Long's 42nd minute delivery.
Home midfielder Adam Forshaw's later attempt was deflected away, although the visitors soon added a decisive second goal through Redmond finding the top corner of the net.
Long then wasted a glorious opportunity to make it three from the penalty spot before Boro substitute Viktor Fischer replied narrowly wide.
However, the Dane supplied a 72nd minute corner headed in by Bamford to reduce the deficit, while ex-Southampton defender Calum Chambers was thwarted by Forster before Rodriguez went close to his second at the other end.
