AFC Bournemouth 3 Middlesbrough 1
Tue 24th Oct 7.45pm
Middlesbrough have missed out on the League Cup quarter-finals after a 3-1 defeat to AFC Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
Following a scoreless opening forty-five minutes, debutant Jack Simpson gave the hosts a lead that was quickly cancelled out by youngster Marcus Tavernier.
However, Callum Wilson converted a 75th minute penalty after Dael Fry had fouled Simpson before substitute Benik Afobe added a late third.
Wilson had already headed wide an early cross from Ryan Fraser before both saw further efforts missing the target.
Adama Traore was next close for the visitors from the edge of the area, although a misplaced back-pass produced an early second-half corner met by the unmarked Simpson from around six-yards.
Six minutes later Boro were level, with teenager Tavernier on the end of a flowing move and driving across goalkeeper Artur Boruc.
The Cherries went back in front, though, when the returning Wilson wrong-footed Dimi Konstantopoulos from the penalty spot.
And their victory was confirmed with seven minutes remaining as Wilson's low delivery was turned in by substitute Afobe.
