Sheffield Wednesday 1 Middlesbrough 2
Sat 23rd Dec 3.00pm
Middlesbrough fought back for a 2-1 victory at Sheffield Wednesday after first goals for the club from Jonny Howson and Ryan Shotton.
The hosts actually led at the break courtesy of Ross Wallace, until Howson equalised immediately following a rare Grant Leadbitter penalty miss.
And then on only his second appearance since joining in the summer, former Birmingham City defender Shotton headed a late winner from Stewart Downing's 83rd minute corner.
Ex-Boro winger Adam Reach tried an early low drive for the hosts, while Patrick Bamford replied by heading Downing's corner across the face of goal.
However, Reach next supplied Wallace to strike low into the net for the opening goal on the half-hour.
Midfielder Howson soon lifted over at the other end, and Martin Braithwaite was then forced wide by goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith.
Danish winger Braithwaite called Wildsmith into action again following the interval, before Britt Assombalonga turned in Downing's cross - but there was a raised flag.
Boro then had a great opportunity to level when Bamford was brought down inside the area, only for Leadbitter's 70th minute penalty to be saved by Wildsmith, who was though immediately beaten by Howson from the edge of the box.
Bamford's delivery then struck against the crossbar before Shottton finally headed the winner from Downing's corner with seven minutes remaining.
