Middlesbrough were denied an important victory at neighbours Sunderland after substitute Callum McManaman equalised deep into added time.

Joel Asoro had given the bottom-of-the-table hosts an early lead but that was turned around by Patrick Bamford and Grant Leadbitter (pen) after Jake Clarke-Salter (Sunderland) and Adama Traore (Boro) were both sent-off.

Jonny Williams brought the struggling home side back level, only for Bamford to add his second and restore the advantage.

The Black Cats had been first to register on eleven minutes when Asoro took advantage as the visitors failed to clear a free-kick.

However, Clarke-Salter, who is on loan from Chelsea, was then dismissed for a bad challenge on Traore, who was soon joining him after clashing with Bryan Oviedo.

Boro were to equalise early in the second-half with a calm finish from Bamford, and moments later Leadbitter wrong-footed Lee Camp from the spot after the keeper brought down the recalled Britt Assombalonga.

But Williams soon replied when converting Ovideo's cross, although Bammford then struck again and signalled a fourth goal in nineteen minutes.

Home substitute Aiden McGeady went close to another before Darren Randolph denied McManaman, who still equalised at the far post from Oviedo's very late corner.
